The health dangers of exposure to toxic metals have been getting some attention in recent years. However, most people are unaware of the frequency of heavy metal toxicity in developed nations. There are many sources of heavy metal exposure, including pollution, heath and beauty products, pesticides and other sources. This exposure results in free radical damage in the body and can contribute to the development of degenerative disease. SEE THE HEAVY METAL QUESTIONNAIRE BELOW…
Some of the most dangerous heavy metals found in the environment include mercury, lead, aluminum, arsenic, uranium, barium, nickel and cadmium. A growing number of medical doctors, naturopathic doctors and other experts agree that exposure to these toxins may result in free radical damage and disease.

Mercury
Mercury has gotten more attention than most heavy metals, partially due to questions about vaccine safety. Mercury exposure can be the result of environmental exposure, dietary habits, or even the fillings in your mouth. Amalgam fillings contain enough mercury to pollute a ten acre lake, yet have been used for years in fillings.
Mercury is cumulative. This means it builds up in the brain, heart, endocrine glands and kidneys. Over time, exposure to mercury can result in memory loss, depression, anemia, auto immune diseases and heart attack.
Lead
Lead is another heavy metal under close scrutiny. Exposure to lead can cause a variety of physical problems and can cause learning impairments in children. With prolonged exposure, young children have been found to experience significant decreases in intelligence and later diagnosed with learning disabilities.
Lead is found in a wide range of products, as well as older homes. Older homes may contain lead paint and pipes that were soldered with lead. In addition to the home, this metal is found in gas, insecticides, pottery, plastics, batteries and cosmetic products.
Aluminum
Aluminum accumulates in the brain, kidneys, bone and skin. Exposure to aluminum has been shown to contribute to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Aluminum is found in a wide range of foods and health products, such as aluminum foil, aluminum cookware, milk, infant formula, baking powders, feminine hygiene products and drinking water.
Arsenic
Arsenic exposure causes damage to the organs of the body, specifically the lungs, liver and kidneys. Symptoms of heavy metal toxicity from arsenic include headaches, fatigue and confusion. Arsenic sources include water, smoke, seafood and detergents.
Uranium
Uranium is a radioactive element that has been released into the environment as a result of thousands of nuclear detonations in locations around the globe and nuclear power plant disasters, most notably Chernobyl in Russia and Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania. Uranium spreads in the atmosphere, causing exposure outside the immediate detonation area, although people in the immediate area experience the effects first. This material can cause a variety of birth defects and cancers.
Nickel
Exposure to nickel in the environment or household products results in accumulation throughout the body, affecting the lungs, immune system, brain, bones and other vital organs. Nickel is found in stainless steel pots, coins, batteries and dental fillings.
